Safe storage of corrosive chemicals: a practical checklist

Acids and alkalis are routine on many sites, but a single storage mistake can be serious. Use this checklist to review your chemical store.

Corrosive chemicals such as sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid and caustic soda are part of everyday work in water treatment, metal finishing and cleaning. Handled well, they are routine. Stored badly, they can damage equipment, harm people and react dangerously with each other.

Separate acids from alkalis

Acids and alkalis react with each other and release heat. Store them in separate bunded areas, or at least on separate spill trays, and never on shelves above each other.

Use the right containers

  • Keep chemicals in their original, labelled containers whenever possible.
  • Check that decanting containers are made of a compatible material. Concentrated sulphuric acid, for example, attacks many plastics that dilute acids do not.
  • Inspect drums and IBCs for bulging, cracks and leaking valves every week.

Contain spills before they happen

Every corrosive store needs secondary containment large enough to hold the contents of the largest container, plus a spill kit with neutralising absorbent, gloves and goggles.

Plan for people, not just chemicals

  • Fit an eyewash station and safety shower close to where chemicals are handled.
  • Train staff on the Safety Data Sheet for each product, including first aid.
  • Keep an up-to-date inventory so emergency responders know what is on site.

If you are unsure whether your storage is right for a product we supply, ask us. We are happy to review the Safety Data Sheet with you and suggest practical improvements.
